The Mind of the Maker

J.M.J. + O.B.T. + M.G.R.*

Michelangelo's other masterpiece, St. Peter's dome.

I just finished a book that was written in 1941 and the experience was a watershed.  I have seen the name Dorothy L. Sayers over the years but I found neither the inspiration nor time to explore her work.

One quote and all that changed:

"Why do you balk at the doctrine of the Trinity—God the three in One—yet meekly acquiesce when Einstein tells you E=mc2?"
–Dorothy L. Sayers

The Mind of the Maker is remarkable in that it is both deeply Trinitarian and at ease with using the word energy relative to God's essential being/action.  Nowadays we see the 'politically correct' use of power for God's work but the relatively rare use of energy (at least in the West).  Our recent Holy Fathers have described "spiritual energy" as the divine action that creates, sustains and sanctifies us, but I  can honestly say that I have never heard this from the pulpit.

Why is the word energy so off limits?

Clearly the New Age movement and gnostic heresies and the effect of Hollywood with its portrayal of 'the force' as an impersonal or pantheistic god have had their effect.

I believe that this 'No God Zone' is a grave mistake for modern faith.

Just read the chapter titles of Dorothy Sayers' classic:

1. THE "LAWS" OF NATURE AND OPINION
2. THE IMAGE OF GOD
3. IDEA, ENERGY, POWER
4. THE ENERGY REVEALED IN CREATION
5. FREE WILL AND MIRACLE
6. THE ENERGY INCARNATE IN SELF-EXPRESSION
7. MAKER OF ALL THINGS-MAKER OF ILL THINGS
8. PENTECOST
9. THE LOVE OF THE CREATURE
10. SCALENE TRINITIES
11. PROBLEM PICTURE
This is the work of a woman who knows what she believes and boldly proclaims truth.

And this was in the middle of World War II when the Battle of England was raging in her homeland.

The book is available online at http://www.worldinvisible.com/library/dlsayers/mindofmaker/mind.c.htm
