Bearing Witness to the Light LXXIX...Three on a Match

J.M.J. + O.B.T. + M.G.R.*

Maybe a superstition,
but is there something more,
something deeper here?

It appears to be first used
in the Rio Grande Valley
of Texas/Mexico
and this is the first mention in print:

"If three men
light their cigarritos
from the same match,
bad luck will surely
overtake one of them soon."

This was written by a US Army officer
just before the turn of the 20th Century.

Do you think that maybe
this "curse" is an inversion
of the Trinitarian blessing;
a ploy by the Evil One
to make what is holy, profane?

Seems much like the perversion
of Friday the 13th, which just may
be the date of the most blessed day,
Our Lord's death on Good Friday.

Of course Hollywood
has its own take on reality
and folklore based superstition.

In the throes of the Great Depression
the regrettable...

THREE ON A MATCH
1932

...ends with a kaleidoscope
of conflicting emotions that does little
to bring peace of mind to the viewer.

Sincerely yours
in Jesus through Mary,
