A Reflection from the Theologica Germanica (14th Century)

CHAPTER 40

But where the true light is, there is a true and just life such as God loves. And if a man's life is not perfect, as was that of Christ, still it is modeled and built on His, and His life is loved, together with modesty, order, and the other virtues, and all self-will, the "I, Me, and Mine," is lost; nothing is devised or sought for except goodness for its own sake.

But where the false light is, men no longer regard the life of Christ and the virtues, but they seek and purpose what is convenient and pleasant to nature. From this arises a false liberty, whereby men become regardless of everything. (((nowadays we say “Whatever!!!”)))   For the true light is the seed of God, and bringeth forth the fruits of God; but the false light is the seed of the Devil, and where it is sown, the fruits of the Devil, nay the very Devil himself, spring up.

The false light sown by the devil leads to the ‘culture of death,” not life, and the passion of lust, not love.

Nazi Germany, the Third Reich,  is an example of what can go wrong, terribly wrong when a weakened state and a disheartened people fall victim to the allure of the faux lights as espoused by the faux gospel. Godless humanism triumphs and man is projected upward, an ascent to the vacant pedestal of god/goddess. Once this happens, “lesser men” are made to assume the subservient/inferior role relative to this deification (e.g. Adolph Hitler as Fuhrer of the German People). This dehumanization invites a fanatic utilitarianism that leads to holocaust.

That is why I posit a fasces (don’t fear the word, look it up in wikipedia and apply the original Roman meaning) of Light, Life and Love to combat the heinous lies and licentiousness of Satan. The evil one wills to deceive the masses—corrupting and perverting these three manifest gifts of grace in short order—dividing and conquering the ideas behind the words and then words themselves.

These gifts from the Blessed Trinity should be bound so tightly and hugged so closely to one’s heart that there is no entryway for the Deceitful One. If Christianity was to do this with religious fervor, I believe we can witness to the solidarity that will usher in Pope John Paul II's New Springtime of Evangelization.

Returing once again to the Theologica Germanica:

CHAPTER 43

And he who liveth in the true Light and true Love, hath the best, noblest, and worthiest life that ever was or will be, and therefore it cannot but be loved and praised above any other life. This life was and is in Christ to perfection, else He were not the Christ.
