The Mystical Finger of God

J.M.J. + O.B.T. + M.G.R.*

I asked my son, John Michael, age 8, what the picture looked like. He responded, "It looks like a Mommy Bear carrying a Baby Bear and it looks like they are connected." I couldn't have said it any better.
Today El Dedo de Dios does resemble the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus after the unprecedented Hurricane Season of 2005 and the very bizarre Tropical Storm Delta that "doubled back" to the East and took out The Finger of God before striking Africa. Christopher Columbus saw this striking feature in 1492 and it is considered a historic landmark worth resurrecting. Hmmmm?

After morning Mass, I came to open the perennial classic, The City of God, by St. Augustine to Book XVI, Chapter 42. There I saw and read about the Finger of God at work in salvation history. The great Doctor of the Church explains it thus:

"...in the period of the revelation of the New Covenant, it was on the fiftieth day after Christ our Pasch was offered up in the sacrifice that the Holy Spirit came down from heaven. Note, too, that this Spirit is called in the Gospel the Finger of God: first, because He directs us to recall to memory events enacted in prophetic symbols, and second, because the Tablets of the Law are said to have been written by the Finger of God.

Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
