The House that Benedict Re-built!

J.M.J. + O.B.T. + M.G.R.*

Anyone who knows me, knows of my lifelong fascination with Yankee Stadium. As a child I remember my first visit and how the sight of the bright green turf was for me a glimpse of youthful paradise. There was no more incredible memory than the sights and sounds of my first ballgame in the crisp spring air of the mid-sixties, before all the hype and commercialism tarnished America's pastime. My uncle, Father Silvester Livolsi took his brother, my brother and me to that afternoon game against the Washington Senators. The Yankees lost, but Roger Maris belted a line drive homer into the right field bull pen that I can still hear resonate in a booming richochet.

I tried to make scale models of The Stadium; I had turf from The Stadium (ALCS 76); I made a computer image of The Stadium from memory on the Mac. 301, 402, 463, 457, 433, 407, 344, 297 mean nothing to most people, but they were the dimensions to America's "temple mound," her "holy ground." Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, Ford, Mantle, Murcer, Mattingly, Guidry, Jeter... her saints (to me).

Today Pope Benedict will be there. The Communion of Saints will be there. Mass will be there. Jesus Christ will be there. I hope all of us will be there in the Spirit.

God Bless America and let your Holy Fire fall.

Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
Mike Rizzio, SOLT
