Cologne Revisited

J.M.J. + O.B.T. + M.G.R.*

Two years removed from World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany—the historic reversal of aquatic flow, for during that week, the Tiber coursed up the Rhine—we must ponder anew the state of a world seemingly on the brink.

We know not what the future holds, but most trend lines bode ill for humankind if we do not return to truth as it is found in absolute reality, the Truth that is a Person, Jesus Christ.

Pope Benedict XVI, the supreme bridge-builder is providing hope for a movement of the Spirit to set the world on fire in the pursuit of this Truth. We must all do our part.

As the summer sun sets once more on the twin towers of the cathedral dedicated to the original twin towers of Christianity, the Virgin Mary and St. Peter; a landmark that stood as faithful witness to the victory of light, life and love over the darkness, death and hate of the Second World War; a skyscraping testament to human achievement amid the bombed out hull of a “city of Churches;” a seat of learning for a once united Church of Fides et Ratio; and the pilgrimage site dedicated to those seeking the Light of Bethlehem; we must recommit ourselves to owning up to the darkness of our sinful past, our bankrupt modernist philosophies, and our disregard for God's revealled Truth.

For as the apostolic preacher, Fr. John Corapi, SOLT is eager provide... a coda to his powerful talks, “When Truth is called a lie, the lights go out, darkness falls, and indeed, if your light is dark, how very deep will the darkness be."

Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
Mike Rizzio, SOLT
