Collective Life—Collective Death

This is the title for the thirteenth chapter of a "lost work" of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Footprints in a Darkened Forest from 1966. Concerning the ongoing trend toward global socialization he writes and I quote:

Teilhard de Chardin felt that the socialization would result in an increase of freedom for personality. As he put it: "A tremendous spiritual power is slumbering in the depths of our multitude, which will manifest itself only when we have learned to break down the barriers of our egoisms."

Fulton Sheen elaborates:

This is possible, because both at the beginning and at the end of the whole evolutionary process, there is Love. The Love-point at the beginning which makes everything turn from complexity to unity is the Alpha; the goal toward which all tends is the perfect Love or the Omega. As he [Teilhard] wrote:

"One day the Gospel tells us, the tension gradually accumulating between humanity and God will touch the limit prescribed by the possibilities of the world. And then will come the end. Then the Presence of Christ , which has been silently accruing in things will suddenly be revealed—like a flash of light from pole to pole."

Now one must ask the question: Why has the Servant of God Fulton J. Sheen tacitly endorsed this adopted "saint" of the New Age (ref: Marilyn Ferguson's, Aquarian Conspiracy)?

Was he co-opted, lured in by the 60's re-definition of love, by humanist/modernist theories that have caused so much disruption in our culture or is there some truth to be gleaned from a man whose legacy Sheen believed would be vindicated over time, for he writes:

It is very likely that within fifty years when all the trivial, verbal disputes about the meaning of Teilhard's "unfortunate" vocabulary will have died away or have taken a secondary place, Teilhard will appear like John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila, as the spiritual genius of the twentieth century.

The fifty year mark came right as Pope John Paul II passed away and Pope Benedict XVI was elected to the Chair of Peter. (Albert Einstein and Teilhard de Chardin died a week apart in April 1955.)

In Introduction to Christianity from 1968, the then University of Tübingen professor, Father Joseph Ratzinger refers to Teilhard's mind enlarging body of work in four places, and it is important to consider these remarks as an indication of ideas that informed the heart and mind of our current Pontiff.

1. pg. 52 "We shall return later to discuss how today this enlarged perspective is at last beginning to gain currency in the Western consciousness as well, especially as a result of stimuli from the work of Teilhard de Chardin."

2. pg. 177 "It must be regarded as an important service of Teilhard de Chardin's that he re-thought these ideas [that Jesus, the new Adam, is destined to draw all mankind to Himself] from the angle of the modern view of the world and, in spite of a not entirely unobjectionable tendency toward the biological approach, nevertheless on the whole grasped them correctly and in any case made them accessible once again."

3. pg. 232 "To use Teilhard de Chardin's terminology, where that took place [when love is valued more than life], the decisive complexity or complexification" would have occurred; bios too would be encompassed by and incorporated into the power of love."

4. pg. 244 "The first of these two concepts [that in the Bible the cosmos and man are not separate quantities] can be accepted again today without argument; and after what we have learned from Teilhard the second [that world and human existence belong necessarily to one another] should no longer be quite incomprehensible either."

Now you can see why Pope Benedict is working his heart out in an effort to purify modern language that has been co-opted. He could not have predicted the current state of affairs; it is a long shot that it can be corrected without Divine Intervention.

I just finished reading the Pope's Jesus of Nazareth. I take it as the LIGHT, that Benedict XVI seeks to shine as a Beacon of Truth to the world shrouded in darkness that is the "dictatorship of relativism." When you add it to the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the Year of the Eucharist focusing on the "true food and true drink" that is Eternal LIFE---Jesus really with us, Source and Summit of our hierarchical, liturgical and communal Church; and the Encyclical God is Love focusing in the Second Person, the Word as LOVE, you see the Holy Spirit at work, purifying the language of love, the language of the Mass and the Eucharistic Sacrifice and the language of the historical and contemporary image of Jesus Christ.

Concerning the workings of Divine Providence, the then Cardinal Ratzinger in his memoir Milestones from 1998, writes:

"To be the first person baptized with the new water was seen as a significant act of Providence. I have always been filled with thanksgiving for having had my life immersed in this way in the Easter Mystery . . . the more I reflect on it, the more this seems fitting for the nature of our human life: we are still waiting for Easter; we are not yet standing in the full light but walking toward it full of trust. [p. 8, Milestones]"

It seems the Holy Father knows full well that the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last are under attack and the Rainbow that connects them, the sign of the covenant is now in the hands of the enemy. We sit and watch as the enemy blatantly and triumphantly thumbs his nose to Almighty God and His Sacred Word.

Let us hope that the Holy Father next focuses on COVENANT and SYMBOLISM and moves to retake the banner that is rightfully Christ's own...the Arched Rainbow. To do this he might try to combine Light-Life-Love in a expression of Marian-Trinitarian truth that will be unassailable and serve as a rallying cry for the masses to retake the high ground.
